Fabulous taste – try all the Christmas sandwiches on the high street, here’s what we found…

A FABULOUS reporter has taken on the challenge of getting a taste for store-bought Christmas sandwiches.
Ayla Soguksu collected sarnies from Waitrose, M&S, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Aldi, sampling everything from turkey to brie.
She rated them on a jingle scale between 1 and 5 – with 5 being the highest mark – and rated each one on its affordability and how Christmasy it really tasted…
And she did it all blindfolded to figure out which ones were also vegetarian and vegan.

This vegan and vegetarian-friendly sandwich is filled with vegan soy chunks, sage and onion filling and cranberry sauce.
Although this sandwich was pleasant, it lacked some flavor. For those who don’t eat meat, it’s a solid choice, but I wouldn’t reach for it straight away.
For this reason, it received a rating of 3 Jingle Bells.
Sainsbury’s: The Ho Ho Hot One
Price: £4.25
Jingle Rating: 4
This sandwich with shredded firecracker chicken on kalonji seed bread and crunchy cranberry slaw had a fiery twist.
It was spicy with a hint of spice and although I liked it, it didn’t quite taste like it Christmas. For this reason, it received a rating of 4 out of 5.
M&S: Jingle Brie-LT
Price: £4.50
Jingle Rating: 3
While it smelled quite smoky at first, I soon discovered that the brioche bun was stuffed with crispy bacon, creamy brie, lettuce, caramelized onion mayo, and a tomato-cranberry chutney sauce.
It was delicious as a sandwich, but I found the bread quite hard for brioche.
Waitrose: Brie & Cranberry
Price: £3.75
Jingle Rating: 4
Even blindfolded, it was clear that it was brie and cranberry, which made it all the more enjoyable to indulge in.
The flavor combination seemed very Christmassy and is a great option for vegetarians looking to get into the festive spirit.
Sainsbury’s: Christmas Cracker Club
Price: £4.50
Jingle Rating: 5
Sainsbury’s came out on top with this sandwich, which contained shredded smoked chicken, smoked bacon, pork, sage and onion stuffing, spiced cabbage and real ale chutney and was topped with mayonnaise sauce.
The bread also appeared to have been grilled beforehand and there was an extra layer – making it the thickest and tastiest sandwich of all!
Although it may be a little more expensive, this sandwich tasted Christmassy and didn’t stand out when it came to ingredients.
Waitrose: PlantLiving: Vegan Bubble & Squeak Sandwich
Price: £3.50
Jingle Rating: 4
Waitrose knows exactly what it’s doing as the vegan sandwich completely surprised me in the best way possible.
It was full of flavor and it’s easy to see why as it contained crumbled bubbles and squeaks, roasted butternut squash, spiced pickled red cabbage, chilli jam, vegan mayonnaise, crispy fried onions and spinach.
It’s a solid 4 on the jingle scale, making it a good choice for vegans.
Aldi: Turkey Festival
Price: £1.99
Jingle Rating: 3
You can’t go wrong with turkey for Christmas, and this sandwich definitely has it in abundance, as well as crispy smoked bacon, meaty pork, sage and onion stuffing, cranberry sauce and mayonnaise.
Although delicious, the cranberry sauce didn’t come through as well as it could have, resulting in the rating of 3 out of 5.
The results…
The clear winner of all these sandwiches was clearly Sainsbury’s very own Christmas Cracker Club. And while the price may put some people off, it’s a good way to look at it that it’s more like four sandwiches in one – you get a lot for what you pay.
For vegetarians, Waitrose’s brie and cranberry sandwich is a very good choice and vegans will hopefully like the brand’s Bubble & Squeak as much as I do.
