I tested Quavers dupes from the supermarket – the winner tastes almost identical and beats Aldi and Lidl

QUAVERS are a classic in many people’s cupboards, perfect for lunch or a tasty snack.
Plus, they’re fairly low in calories compared to other chips, making them a good lunchbox option.
A 16g bag has just 86 calories, compared to 129 calories for a bag of cheese and onion Walkers.
However, the cheesy chips can cost you a pretty penny at £1.95 for a six-pack or £2.03 per 100g.
Luckily for those of us craving something crunchy, several supermarkets are offering their own bargain version of the popular treat.
Some supermarkets even sell more bags for less money, so you get more for your money.
But do they taste just as good?
I tried them out and gave each a score out of ten for taste and price – here are the results.
eighth
- £1.95 for 6 x 16g
- £2.03 per 100g
You really can’t go wrong with a bag of Quavers.
They are my favorite snack in any food offering at most supermarkets.
Every curl has a great crunch and doesn’t taste too artificial.
I’ve always liked that they melt in your mouth with every bite, and they do Pretty and also light.
At Tesco you can buy a six pack of crisps for £1.95, which is £2.03 for 100g.

Lidl Snacktastic cheese curls
- £1.29 for 10 x 15g
- 86p per 100g
When I first opened the bag of Lidl cheese curls, I was greeted by a rather artificial smell – almost like spray cheese.
When I first took a bite, I noticed that the chips were quite soft compared to the original.
Each individual curl was quite small, not as big as eighths.
The overall taste was a bit too artificial for me and the smell was off-putting.
Lidl’s crisps cost £1.29 for a pack of ten, so you get more for your money than a pack of eights.
It only works out to 86p per 100g.

Aldi Snackrite Cheese Curls
- £1.29 for 10 x 15g
- 86p per 100g
I had high hopes for Aldi’s Cheese Curls as I’ve found the chips to be spot on in the past.
When I opened the bag, the first thing I noticed was the smell that can only be described as burnt cheese.
They didn’t taste any better and I could barely eat more than two chips before I had to put the bag away.
Every bite tasted stale and they were very soft and mushy, not like the real thing.
Aldi’s chips cost the same as Lidl’s. So if you don’t care too much about taste, they could be a good option for families.

Asda Cheesy Curls
- £1.15 for 6 x 16g
- £1.13 per 100g
Asda’s Cheesy Curls were pretty similar to the original.
However, they don’t smell particularly good, which put me off a bit at first.
The individual chips are the size of eighths and taste quite similar, if slightly less aromatic.
They’re reasonably priced too: £1.15 for a pack of six, and each bag is the same weight as the original too.
This means Asda’s crisps cost £1.13 per 100g, 90p cheaper than Quavers but not as cheap as the discounters.

- PRICE: 7/10
- OVERALL SCORE: 15/20
Sainsbury’s Cheese Curls
- £1.15 for 6 x 16g
- £1.13 per 100g
Sainsbury’s Quavers Dupes are also called Cheese Curls and are also a good contender.
Their taste is similar to Asda’s – tasty but could have had a bit more cheese flavour.
However, the consistency of the chips wasn’t that crispy, they were quite soft and a bit spongy.
The size of each curl was also slightly smaller.
Sainsbury’s price is the same as Asda’s at £1.13 per 100g.
- TASTE: 7/10
- PRICE: 7/10
- OVERALL SCORE: 14/20
Morrisons Cheese Curls
- £1.29 for 6 x 15g
- £1.43 per 100g
The cheese curls from Morrisons had a similar first smell to the Aldi ones – a bit burnt.
Their taste was also pretty bland, with not enough flavor to be a good Quavers copycat.
Each chip was a good size, just like an eighth, but not as crispy as the original.
For a duplicate they are also quite expensive at £1.43 per 100g.
- TASTE: 5/10
- PRICE: 6/10
- OVERALL SCORE: 11/20
We have now tested duplicates of Popchips from the supermarket – at the discounter they cost half and you get more.
We also tried Milky Way dupes from the supermarket.
