Essex Police released details of the incident in a freedom of information request.

The report states: “The pilot saw what he described as a ‘black’ object flying past at a distance of 20 meters.

“The plane was traveling at 230 miles per hour and the object was traveling from north to south. They said it might be a drone – but surveillance equipment didn’t pick it up.”

Last year, three more aircraft were alerted to another “object” over Essex.

Gary Heseltine, editor of UFO Truth Magazine, said: “Weird things are regularly reported from the air.”

Earlier this year, a witness called police after seeing a UFO over Colchester in June.

The caller said: “I would like to report a sighting of an unidentified flying object. The object was oval in shape and metallic in color with no noticeable markings or lights. There were no conventional aircraft characteristics at all.

“The object was moving in a straight line from east to west just south of my address and the altitude was always estimated to be around 100 feet. The object moved quickly and very evenly across the sky, with no deviation in height or direction or any influence from the weather – that’s the only way I can describe it.

“It was moving too fast for a bird and was definitely not a balloon, which is normally affected by the wind and causes it to spin or tumble.” This was not affected by the light breeze. This had a solid oval shape and was silent.

“Due to the way it was flown, it was not a drone or a model aircraft. I was looking at this from the back of my house and then this object didn’t disappear from my view until it was too far away and obscured by another property. I have no explanation as to what this object could be.”
