An Indiana teenager was found dead in jail days after being incarcerated for drug possession — and her family wants answers.
Shellby L. Hall, 18, was in the Madison County Jail at the time of her death, Indiana State Police said in a news release. She was reportedly arrested for methamphetamine possession and driving under the influence. Investigators began investigating her death on Saturday, November 11, when her body was discovered.
“The investigator’s investigation revealed that sometime this morning, an 18-year-old female inmate, identified as Shellby L. Hall, was found motionless by correctional staff,” the release said. “Prison staff and medical staff provided medical care to the individual, but he was pronounced dead.”
Indiana police said toxicology results and an autopsy are pending and “no foul play is suspected at this time.”
Local Fox affiliate WXIN reported Family members said Hall was shown on surveillance video eating breakfast at the jail just two hours before her death.
Family and friends have organized a candlelight protest and vigil for Wednesday, WXIN reported.
