NEWARK, N.J. (WABC) — A 15-year-old boy was injured in a drive-by shooting outside Central High School in Newark on Monday afternoon.
Shortly after noon, shots were fired outside the school near 17th Avenue and Sayre Street.
A spokesman said the shooting occurred during an evacuation due to a gas leak. The entire student body was outside when the shooting occurred.
The student who was reportedly shot in the shoulder was standing on Sayre Street across from the school.
Students began calling their parents and some came to pick up their children.
After the evacuation, two small gas leaks were discovered.
The school is cooperating with police as the investigation continues.
In addition to trying to track down a suspect and the car, police also want to know if the teen was targeted or if it was a coincidence.
